NHL regular season action on October 8
A full slate of NHL games saw Carolina light up Vancouver and Vegas win in a shootout.
Wednesday night saw big NHL storylines, led by an offensive outburst from the Carolina Hurricanes against the Vancouver Canucks. Logan Stankoven scored three times and Sean Walker notched four assists to power the Hurricanes to a 7-2 home win. Jake DeBrusk had both Vancouver goals, but Carolina piled on three power-play markers and a shorthanded tally.
In Boston, the Bruins handled the expansion Utah Mammoth 6-1 on the strength of a four-point night from David Pastrnak and 36 saves from Jeremy Swayman. Dallas cruised to a 4-0 shutout in Buffalo with Mikko Rantanen contributing four points and Jake Oettinger stopping all 26 Sabres shots.
Nashville rallied from two goals down in Montreal to defeat the Canadiens 5-2, getting key power-play production and a strong showing from Juuse Saros in goal. Ottawa topped Philadelphia 2-1 with Carter Yakemchuk breaking the deadlock on a third-period power play.
It was a close finish in Tampa, as the Lightning edged Minnesota 3-2 behind two goals from John Carlson and Dennis Hildeby's 34 saves. The Islanders defeated Chicago 4-1, led by Bo Horvat's two goals and Ilya Sorokin's solid work in net.
San Jose picked up a 3-2 overtime win in St. Louis courtesy of Darnell Nurse’s winner, and Colorado rolled past Calgary 7-3 thanks to big performances from Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon. The night wrapped up in Vegas where the Golden Knights erased an early Toronto lead and prevailed 4-3 in a shootout, with Trevor Connelly scoring the deciding goal.
