NHL action on October 14, 2026

A close opener in Washington and a shootout finish in Denver highlighted the NHL slate.

Two tightly contested NHL games marked the night of October 14. In Washington, the Capitals and Canadiens traded chances all evening, with the Capitals emerging 5-4 winners on home ice. Later in Denver, the Dallas Stars pulled off a 3-2 win over the Avalanche, clinching the result in a shootout.

At Capital One Arena, Washington grabbed the lead for good in the third period, paced by Alex Tuch's two goals—including a shorthanded tally—and an assist for a three-point night. Montréal twice took a lead in the opening frame, but the Capitals answered both times. Power play and shorthanded goals figured into the back-and-forth scoring. Goalie Charlie Lindgren made 26 saves on 30 shots to secure the win for Washington, while Josh Anderson scored twice for Montréal.

In Denver, the Avalanche and Stars played to a 2-2 tie through sixty-five minutes, with the Stars prevailing in the shootout thanks to a goal by Roope Hintz. Dallas defenseman Miro Heiskanen was named the game's first star with a goal, and Arttu Hyry added a shorthanded marker. Casey DeSmith stopped 25 of 27 Colorado shots in the Dallas net.

There were no PWHL games played on this night.
