NHL Cities A Guide to Arenas Tickets and the Cost of Hockey

Hockeyin60 Originals ·

All 32 NHL markets, with arena addresses, approximate hockey capacity, transport advice, practice facilities and the financial questions facing fans and players.

The cost of hockey begins before the opening faceoff

A hockey ticket buys the same three periods in every NHL city, but the experience surrounding those periods can be very different. One arena sits above a major railway station. Another requires a suburban drive. A modestly priced seat can become a costly evening once parking, food and transport enter the calculation, while a more expensive downtown ticket may come with a straightforward train journey.

For players, the comparison extends well beyond the building. Training facilities, commuting, travel, family life and taxes all affect the appeal of a market. A city with no state personal income tax can offer a financial advantage, but that headline does not calculate a player’s final tax bill.

This guide separates three questions: where fans actually go, what an evening can cost, and what makes a market attractive to the people playing there. The directory covers all 32 teams. Prices are named examples rather than a leaguewide average or a promise of available seats.

What a ticket costs depends on the game

Opponent, day of the week, seat location, team performance and resale demand can move prices sharply. An entry price for a midweek game should not be compared with a Saturday rivalry game as though the difference measures only the city. Season membership prices, student offers and standing room also need separate labels.

The following Ticketmaster event pages displayed these US dollar price ranges during research. They are event-page snapshots, not completed purchases or audited average prices. Availability and the checkout total can change; confirm the seat, currency and mandatory charges before paying.

New Jersey vs Edmonton | November 3 2026 | US$28–158. Event listing

Washington vs Dallas | November 3 2026 | US$45–224. Event listing

Pittsburgh vs Boston | November 5 2026 | US$56–264. Event listing

Boston vs Montreal | November 12 2026 | US$137–595. Event listing

Dallas vs Florida | November 15 2026 | US$48–307. Event listing

Colorado vs Anaheim | November 19 2026 | US$46–250. Event listing

Tampa Bay vs Edmonton | November 19 2026 | US$41–226. Event listing

Nashville vs Utah | November 27 2026 | US$48–260. Event listing

These examples show why a single “NHL ticket price” is not especially useful. Choose a date first, then compare equivalent sections and the complete cost of getting into the building. Canadian games also require a currency check: a Canadian dollar quote and a US dollar quote are not directly comparable.

Ticket prices ranked from highest to lowest

All prices are US dollars before fees. Ranking uses TicketScanner’s August 25 2026 median of the cheapest resale listing for each home game, covering 31–39 games per team. These are entry prices, not average seat prices or current quotes. Equal prices share a rank.

Parking can change the value of a ticket

TD Garden’s published event parking example is US$65, subject to its entry conditions. Carolina’s 2026–27 general parking guidance lists US$34 prepaid plus fees versus US$47 on site. These are venue-specific examples, not typical rates for every nearby garage. [1–2]

At UBS Arena, the Islanders warn that arriving at the Belmont Park Garage without a prepaid pass can mean a US$125 exit charge. That is a particular garage and purchase scenario, not a claim that every Islanders parking space costs US$125. Check the current event map and buy the correct product. [3]

Fans attending games at suburban venues such as Canadian Tire Centre or Amerant Bank Arena should plan the trip before choosing a seat. Downtown locations can offer rail alternatives, but the last train, accessibility and the walk to the platform matter. Calgary’s construction around the Saddledome makes its current access instructions especially important. The cheapest nearby lot is not automatically the easiest one to leave.

What a private box really costs

A private suite is usually priced for the whole space, while a premium club ticket may be priced per person. Confusing the two can turn a reasonable comparison into a misleading one. Ask how many admission tickets are included, whether extra guests cost more, and whether catering, service charges, tax and parking are included.

Suite Experience Group’s published marketplace estimates provide an indication of scale: Calgary Flames suites US$3,000–6,000, Edmonton Oilers US$4,000–8,000, Vancouver Canucks US$3,500–6,500, Montreal Canadiens US$7,000–15,000, and Philadelphia Flyers US$2,700–7,000. These are broad US dollar estimates, including those for Canadian teams, not official club quotes for a particular date. Catering and other inclusions vary. [4–8]

A rivalry game or special event can exceed an advertised general range. Obtain a written quote for the exact fixture and group size. For a simple illustration, a US$5,000 suite plus US$1,500 catering and US$500 in other charges totals US$7,000, or US$350 each for 20 guests. That is arithmetic, not a bookable offer.

The arena directory

Each entry gives the game venue’s street address, not the team’s mailing office or training rink. Capacities are rounded orientation figures for hockey, not live sellable inventory; renovations, accessible seating and event configuration can change them. Utah is treated separately because its renovation changes the configuration. Directions links use the arena address. Venue links provide current access information.

Which cities need an arena decision

Age alone does not establish that a building needs replacement. Sightlines, accessible facilities, infrastructure, training space, premium revenue and the cost of renovation matter. The useful question is whether a city has an approved project, a funded renovation or merely an idea.

Calgary has the clearest near-term replacement: Scotia Place is being built, with completion expected in 2027 and the Flames anticipating their 2027–28 home schedule there. The accompanying Esso Community Arena is intended to provide practice and community ice. Until the move happens, a game ticket still sends fans to the Saddledome. [9]

Ottawa continues to pursue a LeBreton Flats development. A downtown setting would materially change the journey for many fans, but a proposal should not be written as an open arena with a guaranteed opening date. Canadian Tire Centre remains the game venue. [10]

Philadelphia’s Flyers and 76ers have announced a proposed new arena on the former Spectrum site, targeting 2030. Washington is undertaking a major Capital One Arena transformation. Those are different situations: a replacement project and a renovation of the current home. [11–12]

Saint Paul and the Wild have outlined a renovation framework for the Grand Casino Arena entertainment complex, with public funding questions central to delivery. Utah is already renovating Delta Center in phases, including hockey sightlines. Its eventual capacity should not be mistaken for a fully completed seating configuration today. San Jose’s long lease and improvement plans likewise should not be confused with approval of a separate new building. [13–15]

Practice facilities matter as much as the game arena

A modern practice base can bring ice, strength training, rehabilitation, medical services and video work together. That can make the working day more efficient even when it does not appear on a television broadcast. For fans, however, the existence of a training rink does not establish that every practice is open to the public.

Several teams practise beside or inside their game complex, including Columbus, Detroit, Edmonton and New Jersey. Others commute to a separate base: Dallas to Frisco, Montreal to Brossard, the Rangers to Tarrytown and Philadelphia to Voorhees in New Jersey. The directory identifies the practice location separately so visitors do not arrive at the wrong building.

Vancouver is a notable facility story. The city and Canucks announced an agreement to explore a dedicated practice facility at Britannia in July 2026. Exploration is not the same as an operating facility. Chicago’s training base also illustrates why names require checking: Fifth Third Arena has been rebranded as Blackhawks Ice Center presented by Fifth Third Bank. [16–17]

The tax advantage is real but more complicated than a map

Florida, Texas and Nevada do not levy a state personal income tax on wages, and Tennessee does not tax earned wages. That can favour the Panthers, Lightning, Stars, Golden Knights and Predators when other factors are comparable. Federal income tax and other obligations remain. A team’s home address cannot determine an individual player’s final liability. [18–21]

Road work matters. California and New York have rules allocating professional athlete income to work performed in their jurisdictions, commonly using duty days. The relevant days can extend beyond games. Training, practice, travel classifications and contract terms require attention. Playing half a schedule away from home therefore prevents a simple assumption that an entire salary escapes state tax because the home rink is in Florida. [22–23]

Washington also needs a date attached to any claim. The state’s published guidance describes a new income tax beginning in 2028. Seattle’s current position should not be presented as a permanent promise for a multiyear contract. Check the effective law and applicable rules when comparing an offer. [24]

Canada adds provincial differences and cross-border questions. Alberta’s top provincial rate is lower than those in several other Canadian NHL provinces, which can favour Calgary or Edmonton in a simplified comparison. But a top marginal rate applies to the next dollar in the relevant bracket; it is not the average rate paid on every dollar of salary. Residency, deductions and tax credits affect the result. [25–26]

Canadian tax residence depends on the facts and residential ties. Non-residents can still owe Canadian tax on Canadian employment income. The Canada–US treaty also contains a specific exception for athletes playing in leagues with regularly scheduled games in both countries; generic entertainer withholding summaries should not be used as a complete NHL payroll calculation. [27–28]

Local geography complicates the comparison further. The Capitals play in Washington but train in Virginia. The Flyers play in Pennsylvania and train in New Jersey. The Islanders play in Elmont, outside New York City. A Rangers player is not automatically subject to New York City resident tax simply because Madison Square Garden is in Manhattan. Residence and work allocation need separate analysis.

For a player comparing offers, the useful exercise is a personalised after-tax projection prepared by a cross-border sports tax adviser. It should account for residence, workdays, compensation structure and credits, alongside contract security and living costs. This article explains the issues and does not calculate any player’s personal tax liability.

A better way to compare hockey cities

Fans should compare the whole evening: a dated seat quote, transport, parking, food and the time needed to leave. A nearby hotel or rail connection can matter more than a small difference in advertised ticket price. Suite buyers should compare written, itemised quotes for the same number of guests.

Players face a broader decision. Training facilities, medical support, travel, role on the team, family needs and the chance to compete all have value. Taxes belong in that decision, but they cannot carry it alone. The most useful NHL city guide helps readers ask better questions before spending money or making a commitment.

Sources and price notes

Venue links in the directory support address and access checks. Rounded capacities are orientation figures and should be checked against the current event seating plan. Ticket links identify the exact fixture behind each price snapshot. The following sources support the comparative sections. Prices and project schedules can change after October 27 2026.
