It is a painful beginning, but with 77 games remaining, there is still time to recover.
Can a team start this badly and still win the Stanley Cup? An exact 0–5–0 championship precedent could not be verified for this article. However, NHL history offers a remarkable example of a team overcoming a much longer struggle.
The 2018–19 St. Louis Blues started 7–10–3 through twenty games—the worst twenty-game opening by an eventual Stanley Cup champion, according to historical records compiled by Champs or Chumps.
Even in January, the Blues sat last overall. Five months later, they were lifting the Stanley Cup.
That does not mean Calgary should expect a similar turnaround. It does show that an awful opening stretch need not define an entire season.
The immediate challenge is getting back into the playoff race. To finish with 95 points, Calgary would need 61.7% of the available points over its remaining 77 games. A record of 43–25–9 would get it there, although 95 points would not guarantee qualification.
That is a demanding pace, but the arithmetic leaves room for recovery.
For the Flames, the next objective is straightforward: win a game, build some confidence and begin reducing the deficit. Championship talk can wait. Five games have put Calgary behind—but they have not settled its season.
