Detroit Secures Its Scoring Anchor While the Bigger Questions Remain

Alex DeBrincat’s seven-year extension keeps a 41-goal scorer in place after a difficult opening stretch for the Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings have committed seven more years to Alex DeBrincat, giving their leading scorer a long-term place in the team’s plans. The extension announced Wednesday, October 14 carries a $13 million average annual value, for a total of $91 million.

The agreement settles one important personnel question during an unsettled stretch on the ice. Detroit was 1-3-2 after Tuesday’s overtime loss to New Jersey. Keeping DeBrincat does not change those results, but it establishes who will remain a central part of the attack.

His recent production explains the size of the commitment. DeBrincat finished the 2025-26 season with 41 goals and 44 assists in 82 games. He led Detroit in goals and points, while also supplying 15 power-play goals and six game-winning goals.

He has carried that scoring into the new season. Through Detroit’s first six games, the 28-year-old had four goals and eight points, leading the team in both categories. Two of those goals came in the overtime loss to the Devils.

DeBrincat is also staying close to home. The Farmington Hills, Michigan native arrived in Detroit in a July 2023 trade with Ottawa. He previously played for Chicago, which selected him in the second round of the 2016 draft.

The new agreement follows a four-year contract with a $7.875 million annual cap hit that is in its final season. Detroit is making a substantially larger financial commitment to retain a player who has already demonstrated he can produce across a full schedule.

The next test is collective. The Red Wings have secured an established scorer, but their early record shows how much remains to be solved around him. The extension provides continuity; turning individual offense into more wins is the work that follows.
