On October 9, 2026, the Washington Capitals defeated the New York Rangers 3-1 at Capital One Arena. Alexis Lafreniere gave New York a 1-0 lead on the power play at 10:17 of the first, beating Logan Thompson from the top of the slot off a pass from J.T. Miller. The Rangers had won four straight entering the night.
Timothy Liljegren tied it 1-1 with a one-timer from the left point at 6:08 of the second in his first goal with Washington. Igor Shesterkin stopped 13 of 14 shots before leaving at 8:20 of the second with a lower-body injury. He jammed his right leg into the post while scrambling back to the net and was helped off without putting weight on the leg. Dylan Garand made 11 saves in relief.
Boone Jenner broke the tie at 17:38 of the second, intercepting Cole Beaudoin's clearing attempt and beating Garand with a wrist shot from between the circles. It was Jenner's first goal since signing with Washington on July 1. Tom Wilson scored into an empty net with one second left for the 3-1 final. Thompson finished with 22 saves as the Capitals improved to 3-1-0.
