On October 9, 2026, the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in a shootout at Nationwide Arena. Damon Severson opened the scoring at 10:52 of the first with a one-timer from the left circle off a cross-ice pass from Zach Werenski in his season debut after shoulder surgery. Mathieu Olivier made it 2-0 at 11:40 of the second with a shot from the right circle that deflected off Sergei Murashov's skate.
Bryan Rust cut the deficit to 2-1 at 14:30 of the second with a move around Severson at the net. Evgeni Malkin tied it 2-2 at 3:19 of the third when Erik Karlsson's slap shot deflected off Olivier's stick and fluttered through traffic off Malkin. Columbus outshot Pittsburgh 24-7 in the second and 45-22 overall.
Cam Talbot made 20 saves in his Blue Jackets debut after signing on Sept. 14 and denied all three Pittsburgh shootout attempts. Kent Johnson scored the only shootout goal, beating Murashov with a snap shot to open the tiebreaker. Murashov stopped 43 shots in regulation for the Penguins, who have lost three straight at 0-2-1 since a 2-0 start. Cole Sillinger had two assists for Columbus, which improved to 2-1-0.
